ESOS Phase 2 – Why now is the time to realise your energy saving potential
Energy compliance can often seem like an unnecessary burden for many organisations, it requires a lot of focus, time and money, and most of the opportunities to save turn out to be too difficult to implement. This is in fact a myth.
At the time of ESOS phase 1 in 2015, 2.8bn pounds worth of savings were yet to be realised by UK businesses. That number hasn’t changed much almost 4 years on as over 40% of UK businesses were non-compliant last time around. ESOS isn’t something to pass up on for three clear reasons: avoiding a £50,000 fine for non-compliance, realising considerable saving opportunities for your business, and benefitting the environment. More often than not companies do not have the guidance or time to carry out the measures revealed in the ESOS report; this is where expert support can help to drive forward a wide variety of saving opportunities.
With the help of an ESOS lead assessor, UK businesses can use ESOS as an opportunity to reveal some simple measures to take action. Savings are in the millions for such things as: LED lighting retrofit (cut electricity use by up to 85%), heating and ventilation controls (up to 50% saving), and behavioural change (discussing issues with employees and what actions they can take has saved millions for some of the country’s largest industrial sites).
Do you qualify?
If you meet one of the following, you are required to conduct an ESOS audit:
- Employ 250 people or more
- Has an annual turnover in excess of €50M (£38,937,777) and a balance sheet total in excess of €43M (£33,486,489)
- It is part of a group of UK organisations that includes at least one eligible organisation.
ESOS Phase 2 is now well underway, with many organisations having signed up already. The deadline for compliance is the 5th December 2019, but waiting will only lead to increased costs as demand for ESOS lead assessors increases.
A clear pathway to savings
At Buy electricity online, we have identified a clear route to ESOS compliance and realised energy saving opportunities. Working in partnership with an ESOS lead assessor we can ensure 100% compliance, we will then highlight key areas from the ESOS report, developing and communicating a robust strategy on all energy reduction measures from the low hanging fruits to the larger scale projects. With non-commodity costs subject to a 30-40% increase in 2019 on energy bills, UK businesses will need to account for savings across their portfolio to mitigate these costs and contribute to the UK’s commitment to energy reduction and climate mitigation.
